War, Art and You at Studio 1219

Posted January 26, 2012

Studio 1219 is undertaking a monumental task: creating a mural the size of Picasso’s famous Guernica—roughly 11 feet by 25 feet.  As Picasso’s mural depicted his reaction to the devastation incurred after the bombing of the village of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War, the Studio’s mural will contain symbols of war and its effects; though it will also depict the hope for peace in the twenty-first century. The mural is part of the Studio’s Picasso Becomes You project and will be unveiled during the performance at the McMorran Place Theater on April 21st.

This modern mural will be comprised of contributions collected from vets, family members, students and others impacted by war.  Final selections for the completed mural will be chosen by the design team putting it together. Submissions are welcomed in an electronic file format. For more information on how to submit a symbol, idea, word or element to the mural, please contact Jenny Rogers-Belleau at .

To prepare for the mural, Studio 1219 will be hosting a special event, War, Art, and You, on February 18 at 2:00 p.m. The event will feature several speakers, veterans, a short presentation on Picasso’s Guernica, and an opportunity to create a submission for the mural. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are encouraged by calling the Studio at (810) 984-ARTS (2787).  Anyone who has been touched by the adversities of war, and those who have a hope for peace, is encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Notes: an 8’ x 16’ replica of Picasso’s Guernica will also be a part of the “Picasso Becomes You” event in April. This piece was completed by students and crew members in Saginaw, MI. “Picasso Becomes You” is a live art event and theatrical production. Art exhibits are created by students and local artists from the St. Clair County region. Artifacts from earlier productions will also be on display.
