Studio 1219 Does a “Double Take/Thinking Outside the Box and Bowl

Posted May 20, 2010

For the first time in – perhaps—years, area artists from different arts groups are collaborating on a unique exhibit that will be on display and on sale in the Chase and Van Gogh galleries of Studio 1219, 1219 Military, Port Huron.  From May 25 through June 26 this two-part exhibit will feature two-dimensional work of photographers and painters—entitled “Double Take” – and the whimsical three-dimensional work of area potters and wood workers—called “Thinking Outside the Box and Bowl.” The opening wine and cheese reception for the exhibit will be held on June 4th from 6-9. The public is invited to attend this free opening.

In the two-dimensional exhibit, “Double Take,” visitors will see two or more views of one subject. One will be a photograph and one will be a painter’s interpretation of the photograph. In addition, there are woodcarvings inspired by photos as well as a colorful mosaic piece and one clay piece.

“For “Double Take,” the photographers were excited to discover how their work would be interpreted, and we think the public will be, too,” LeeAnne McInnis, Exhibits Committee Chair explained. “The idea sparked much enthusiasm with artists in the groups that are involved.” Those groups include Studio 1219’s Artists’ Network, members of the Blue Water Art Association, and members of the Shutterbug’s Camera Club.  All have worked feverishly to put together this unique exhibit. “With over 70 new works of art created from the response we’ve had, it will be the Studio’s largest exhibit so far with local artists,” said Lee-Perry Belleau, Executive Director of Studio 1219. “We issued a challenge to the artists, and they met it with great creativity and flair. The fascinating part for me was getting a glimpse of the ways photographers view and capture the world through their lenses, then to rediscover the same subject through the imagination and skill of the painters.”

The second part of the collaboration is for area potters and wood workers to “Think Outside the Box and Bowl.” This meant using their well-honed skills to produce a piece of work and, at the same time, surrender themselves to whimsy, playfulness, and color – as in Jane Barden’s “Toad and Frog” interpretation. The Studio was looking for something out of the ordinary, so artists were encouraged to have their work be inspired by a short trip to Oz, Wonderland, Dr. Seuss, or a favorite childhood fantasy. It promises to be a delightful display for children of all ages.

The idea for the exhibit was conceived to meet a couple of Studio 1219’s goals: 1.) To initiate collaboration with other groups, businesses, and/or tourism entities; 2.) To enhance the quality of life in our community; 3.) To raise awareness of the importance of these kinds of efforts to provide something of interest to the community, and 4.) To support “buying locally” as an economic boost for our area.

“I think the public will agree this one-of-a-kind exhibit is well worth experiencing.” Belleau added.
